SAFETY SAFETY

The RX 350's advanced safety features help you keep control under difficult conditions. In 2010, the RX received the United States Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest safety rating.

Stay in control with advanced safety systems

The Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system combines engine output, braking, traction control, Vehicle Stability Control and steering to assist you in challenging driving situations. In an emergency, VDIM determines the most effective combination of preventative measures to help you maintain control of the vehicle.  When cornering on slippery surfaces, Active Torque Control All Wheel Drive balances the driving effort to the front and rear wheels, helping to reduce understeer or oversteer.

Active Cruise Control keeps your distance

In addition to conventional cruise control, the RX 350 Sports and Sports Luxury feature a vehicle-to-vehicle distance technology known as Active Cruise Control (ACC)1. Pre-set your preferred cruising speed and this speed will be maintained until the radar detects another vehicle in your path. ACC will reduce speed accordingly, and will even apply the brakes if necessary. Your nominated speed is resumed once a safe following distance can be maintained.

Active headrests

To help support your head in rear end collisions, the driver and front passenger seat headrests have been designed to move up and forward, providing effective head support and reducing the effects of whiplash injuries.

Pre-collision safety

The Lexus Pre-Collision safety System (PCS)2 in the Sports and Sports Luxury models helps reduce injury and damage where an impact is unavoidable. PCS is assisted by a radar sensor embedded in the front grille, which monitors the distance of the vehicle from objects ahead. If the PCS determines a collision is imminent, it will alert the driver via a visual indicator and buzzer sound. If the driver brakes, brake assist will operate to supplement braking force. If the driver does not brake and PCS determines a collision is unavoidable, pre-crash seatbelts will be activated retracting the driver and front passenger seat belts. If the driver still does not brake, pre-crash braking will automatically apply the brakes in an effort to reduce collision speed.

Ten SRS airbags

The RX 350 surrounds you with protection, including dual stage front SRS airbags, side airbags for the front and rear seats, knee airbags and side curtain-shield airbags. The dual stage front airbags deploy in accordance with the severity of the collision. On the front passenger's side is a dual chamber airbag, which secures the passenger's upper body to help disperse the physical impact. Knee airbags prevent the driver and front passenger from slipping under the seatbelt, reducing the risk of lower limb injury.

Footnotes

1. ACC is a driver assist technology and should not be used in place of safe driving practices. The driver should continue to monitor the road ahead.
2. PCS is a driver assist technology and should not be used in place of safe driving practices. The driver should continue to monitor the road ahead.
